How To Dress For the Golf Course When You’re Not Playing Golf

I admit it. I don’t play golf very well at all. I adore it, I support it, I admire and respect it, but I’m terrible at it. You don’t want me to prove this to you. Just trust me. I love going to my country club, I enjoy the pool, brunch, cocktail events and charity dinners, and can hold more than my own on the tennis court. Normally I have no problem knowing what to wear, but in the last year I’ve spent more time on the golf course and at golfing events than ever before, and haven’t liked the fashion options available. I spend a lot of time around the sport, but don’t play often enough to justify dropping a small fortune on a professional, brand-name golfing wardrobe. I’m also the type of person who doesn’t over-consume fashion and I like to have outfits that can be mixed, matched and worn for multiple occasions and in many ways.

What To Wear On The Golf Course When You Don't Play Golf

Additionally, most of my time spent on a golf course coincides with travel, which means I have limited space for clothes (since I very strictly only travel with a carry-on) and don’t want to waste any of it on an outfit I can only wear for one activity. My solution to this are my two favorite fashion fixes, outlined below:

What To Wear On The Golf Course: Shop Your Own Closet

Acceptable items you probably already have in your closet that can also be worn on the golf course: Chino pants, Long-line shorts, polo shirts, cotton button down shirts with collars, cashmere sweaters, wind-breaker jackets, keds, vans (low top), leather loafers, tennis shoes and trainers. Appropriate fabrics: canvas, cotton, linen, cashmere. Stay away from: silk, satin, organza, taffeta, denim and loud prints and colors. Stripes or pin-point polka dots and very subtle florals are acceptable but solid colors like green, blue, white, tan and red or black are best. Try a monochromatic look like all-navy blue or all dark green to create a cohesive, sporty style from head-to-toe.

WHAT TO WEAR ON THE GOLF COURSE: SHOP SECOND HAND

Ebay and Poshmark are a gold mine of new golfing clothes, most of which are in excellent condition. A lot of times pros and serious golf players will sell items they’ve been gifted or worn for only a season because they immediately get the new styles as soon as they’re available, and you can snag them for 40% – 80% off online at resell sites. There’s also a lot of gorgeous vintage pieces like windbreakers and hats that can be worn as athleisure and other activities besides an afternoon of golf.
